Recording and Streaming in Classrooms

Updated: Sept 8th, 2022

UBC IT Audio Visual has temporarily equipped approximately 160 General Teaching Spaces (GTS) with dedicated recording and streaming capacity (otherwise known as "Media Capture" or "Lecture Capture"). This has resulted in 70% of GTS classrooms of 30 seats and above having the ability to record and stream. For the remaining GTS spaces, just-in-time solutions or temporary recording carts are available upon request. When searching for a classroom on Find a Space, this functionality will be identified as “Media Capture”  (as opposed to “Lecture Capture”) under the amenities menu. Classrooms with built-in or temporary add-on recording and streaming capabilities are configured using the Panopto video platform. This is not a live, 2-way interactive platform.

Existing lectern PCs have been leveraged and augmented with recording peripherals (cameras, mics, etc.) and software to provide schedulable recording/streaming capacity. Recording and streaming capabilities varies from room-to-room (e.g. ability to capture inputs such as document cameras). Documentation and demonstrations are available below.

Zoom

Only a small number of General Teaching Spaces are equipped with dedicated videoconferencing systems (ALRD B101, ESB 1012, ESB 1013, ESB 2012, IBLC 182, ORCH 3074, PHRM 1101, SPPH 143) that support interactive platforms such as Zoom. However, we may be able to provide portable AV carts that can be deployed into a space for the purposes of running a Zoom session. Due to a limited supply of AV carts for Zoom, we may not be able to accommodate all requests. Please contact the AV Helpdesk at av.helpdesk@ubc.ca to discuss needs.
