Course Insights is UBC’s learning analytics application that brings together course data into clear, actionable summaries for instructors and teaching teams. It helps users track trends in participation, understand discussion dynamics, and observe student progress over time while maintaining a transparent record that supports evidence-informed course decisions.

What can I use it for?
You can use Course Insights for gathering different types of learning analytics:
- See course data in easy-to-understand visualizations that help you quickly identify trends, patterns, and changes over time
- Access course insights on your own without needing to submit analyst requests for common questions about student activity and course performance
- View engagement and course completion information in one place, making it easier to understand how students are interacting with your course
- Support evidence-informed teaching decisions by using real course data to guide course planning, instructional strategies, and student support

What do I need to use Course Insights?
A supported web browser
Course Insights runs in most native web browsers, supporting Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
Access to Course Insights
Course Insights access in Canvas must be requested and created through the LT Hub. As this tool is currently still being piloted, please contact us at the LT Hub if this is a project of interest to you.
Tips
- Please note that Course Insights does not work on mobile devices. Ensure that you are accessing Course Insights on Canvas with a desktop device instead.
How do I use Course Insights?

Set up and access Course Insights
- To use Course Insights, you will first need to contact us at the LT Hub to request Course Insights access for your Canvas course.
- Once we have given you access, you will need to turn on Course Insights in your Canvas course.
- Log in to your Canvas course with your UBC CWL (Campus Wide Log-In) and click Settings in the Course Navigation.
- Click the Navigation tab.
- Find the Course Insights menu item, click the options menu (the 3 vertical dots), and choose Enable.
- Click Save.
- The Course Insights menu item will now be available for you. Click Course Insights in the Course Navigation to launch the tool in a new browser tab.
- Once in Course Insights, navigate freely among our current four key features: Course Activity, Discussion Analytics, Data Export, and Module Progress.

Access the Course Activity in Course Insights
With the "Course Activity" feature, you can analyze learner engagement across Canvas modules, pages, and other course content.
- Log in to your Canvas course and click Course Insights in the Course Navigation.
- Click Open Course Activity.
- You may see a usage disclaimer for the tool. Please read through it, agree to the terms and conditions, and click Continue to Course Activity to proceed to the feature.
- In the new page that loads, you can use the filter bar at the top of the page to configure and adjust event views to your needs:
- Click the Display Options menu to group Canvas Items by "Module" or "Type". You can also select "Items" to show all the items in your course.
- Click the Select Modules menu to include/exclude events for specific modules from being displayed
- Click the Select Types menu to include/exclude events for specific Canvas Item types from being displayed.
- Click Select Date Range to open a calendar interface to filter by date.
- Click the bookmark icon in the top right to save your configurations.
- The table shown on the screen provides more details on each course activity.
- Click Expand on the left-most side of the table to see each item's data.
- To expand the event time series chart, click the full screen icon on the right-most side of the table next to each row.
- Sort the table by Views, Module, Module Position, and Type by clicking on the arrow icons next to each field.

Access the Discussion Analytics in Course Insights
The "Discussion Analytics" feature is separated into 3 tabs: Course Level, Topic Level, and User Level. Each tab has its respective visualizations and data which can be downloaded.
- Log in to your Canvas course and click Course Insights in the Course Navigation.
- Click Open Discussion Analytics.
- You may see a usage disclaimer for the tool. Please read through it, agree to the terms and conditions, and click Continue to Discussion Analytics to proceed to the feature.
- In the new page that loads, you can switch between content by navigating between the Course Level, Topic Level, and User Level tabs.
- The Chart Type drop-down menu on the left side will allow you to switch between four primary visualizations: Network Graph, Post Timelines, Heatmap, and Word Chart. Please note that each chart type offers a different collection of data visuals.
- To download discussion data, scroll down to the bottom of each page and click DOWNLOAD CSV.
- Click the bookmark icon in the top right to save filters and visualizations presets.
- Click the settings icon in the top right to adjust feature-wide settings.

Export your data from Course Insights
You can self-serve your own data inquiries with the "Data Exports" feature in Course Insights.
- Log in to your Canvas course and click Course Insights in the Course Navigation.
- Click Open Data Export.
- You may see a usage disclaimer for the tool. Please read through it, agree to the terms and conditions, and click Continue to Data Export to proceed to the feature.
- In the new page that loads, you can configure what types of data inquiries you would like to export.
- Preview the data structure by clicking the Preview icon on the right of each row.
- Filter the data ranges for the applicable data exports by clicking the Date range input.
- Save filter ranges by clicking the bookmark icon in the top right.
- Check all the boxes for each data export you wish to download.
- Click Export Selected to download all the data you have selected.

- You can access the Data Export tour by clicking the "help icon" on the top right. The tour will take you through the features step by step.
- After you unzip the downloaded data, you can open the "data_dictionary.txt" file. It provides a detailed explanation of every field and Canvas datatype
Access the Module Progress in Course Insights
The "Module Progress" feature in Course Insights was built specifically for courses which use Modules and completion-based items. Please note that the data may be inaccurate if you access this feature on a course without modules.
- Log in to your Canvas course and click Course Insights in the Course Navigation.
- Click Open Module Progress.
- You may see a usage disclaimer for the tool. Please read through it, agree to the terms and conditions, and click Continue to Module Progress to proceed to the feature.
- In the new page that loads, you will see that the "Module Progress" feature is separated into 3 tabs - Overall Progress, Student Progression, and Student Checkpoints.
- In Overall Progression, click on any of the Module Status bars to see the isolated information on that module, and click again to de-select.
- Hover over the timeline graph to see % completion over time.
- You can also click on a specific timeline to isolate that module's information.
- In Student Progression, scroll to browser per student's progress or click the Sort settings icon in the top-right corner to sort by the students' names or by the completion percentage.
- Hover on a student will show the % progress / per module of the student.
- You can also click on a student to pin their information.
- In Student Checkpoints, you can see a Canvas-style progress list per student.
- Click the dropdown arrow beside "Student" to select a student or type the student's name directly.
- In Overall Progression, click on any of the Module Status bars to see the isolated information on that module, and click again to de-select.
