Learning technology leadership at UBC consider the pedagogical, technical, financial, security, and privacy of new technologies to reach a final decision on the central support offered to each evaluated tool. Below are statuses of more recently considered learning technologies.

Formal Pilots

When a tool enters into a formal pilot, its status may be: Active Pilot (evaluation currently underway), Decision Pending (evaluation complete but awaiting institutional decision on support), or Decision Reached (institutional decision on support made).

Ally is a content-checking tool that works in Canvas to help instructors improve the accessibility of their course content. UBC had decided to centrally support and fund Ally for an extended pilot. Use of Ally was put on pause in November 2023.

CATME is a tool for asking students to review the contributions of their peers to group work. UBC has decided not to centrally support or fund CATME. This decision follows recommendations from a 2020 Student Peer Assessment Tools Working Group.

Course Spaces Decision Reached

Course Spaces is a WordPress-based interactive website platform developed at UBC for sharing course content. UBC has decided not to centrally support or fund Course Spaces. Instructors interested in sharing open course content can instead use UBC Blogs or UBC Wiki.

Crowdmark is an application for grading online, designed for easing the challenges of grading collaboratively with a teaching team. UBC has decided to centrally support (until May 2024) Crowdmark, but faculties/departments must provide funding per student per course.

edX Edge Decision Reached
Central Support & Funding ended May 2023
edX Edge as an online course delivery alternative to Canvas that allows online course content to be presented in a highly organized sequence of modules and pages. UBC had decided to centrally support and fund edX Edge. The tool was sunset in May 2023.

Gradescope is an application for grading online, designed for easing the challenges of grading collaboratively with a teaching team. UBC has decided to centrally support Gradescope, but faculties/departments must provide funding per student per course.

Hypothesis lets teaching teams and students annotate and tag online readings, for their own use or to share their notes with each other. UBC has decided to centrally support the free, open-source, web-based version of Hypothesis.

iClicker Cloud is an online student response system that allows instructors to collect and grade responses to in-class questions, which students answer individually using their own computer or mobile device. UBC has decided to centrally support and fund iClicker Cloud.

Mattermost a chat tool for real-time and asynchronous communication and collaboration, meaning instant messages and threaded discussions can coexist in one, “anytime” course space. UBC has decided to centrally support Mattermost, but faculties/departments must provide funding per teaching team member.

peerScholar is a peer review tool that allows a high degree of granularity and customization in how you have students review one another’s work. UBC has decided to centrally support and fund peerScholar.

Proctorio Decision Reached

Proctorio is an online remote proctoring tool that allows instructors to give an invigilated quiz or exam in Canvas. UBC had decided to centrally support Proctorio, but the decision to support Proctorio was changed in light of concerns raised around its use during COVID-19. The tool was sunset in March 2021.

Team Formation Decision Reached
No Central Support or Funding
Team Formation is a homegrown UBC tool that enables you to create teams based on student traits, skills, and preferences. UBC has decided not to centrally support or fund Team Formation at this time; however, limited support is available from UBCO as development of the tool continues.

Jupyter Course is a paid, more customizable version of JupyterHub; content is tied to a specific Canvas course and your students will access it through Canvas.

You can use Kaltura to record, upload, publish, search, and embed media directly in one or multiple Canvas courses.
